Cupping is a Traditional Chinese Medicine practice that involves suctioning the skin with special cups. The cups themselves are normally made of glass, bamboo, earthenware, or silicone. These cups are suctioned to the patient’s skin with the use of flame, called fire cupping, or with a special, handheld device. Cupping free courses the qi, brings blood flow up to the affected area, helps with inflammation and reduces pain. It is often used in conjunction with other therapies, such as acupuncture and Tuina and doesn’t pose a high risk of unwanted side effects.
There are many different kinds of cupping, but the most common type of cupping is either moving cupping or stationary cupping. Moving cupping is where a media or oil is applied to the skin and the cup is suctioned but able to move freely along the affected area. The most common complaint that moving cupping is used for is back and muscle pain. Stationary cupping is where the cups are placed on the skin but do not move. Stationary cupping can be used for such complaints as asthma or colds and flus, and have the benefit of activating the lymphatic system, circulating the blood, calming the nervous system, and (of course) relaxing the muscles. There is a chance of bruising but that should disappear in anywhere from one week to three weeks time.
Cupping is a great addition to any health care routine. It is safe, effective, and feels great. Book your appointment to experience this technique!
